    • The US is the world's largest emitter of CO2 and our emissions are still rising steadily. It will take decades before many rapidly growing economies reach our levels of CO2 pollution per person.

    • The air pollutants associated with automobiles are: PM, NOx,SO2, HC,CO,CO2.

    • Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the most important greenhouse gas (GHG), referring to substances that trap heat in the earth's atmosphere and cause global warming. The largest portion of harmful GHG emissions is the CO2 released from burning fossils fuels: oil, coal, and natural gas.

    • If current pollution trends continue, scientists conclude that the earth could probably be about 1 degree centigrade warmer by 2025 and 3 degrees centigrade warmer by 2100. This rapid temperature rise could have several effects:
      - Large changes in climate.
      - A rapid extinction of species.
      - Water expands as it warms and glaciers melt, adding water to the oceans, thus we can expect widespread flooding of coastal areas as sea levels rise.
      - Changes in the distribution of disease-bearing organisms so that people, domestic animals, and crops might be exposed to diseases previously absent from an area.

    • A gallon of gasoline weighs just over 6 pounds. When burned, the carbon in it combines with oxygen from the air to produce about 19 pounds of CO2. But counting the energy that went into making and distributing the fuel, the total global warming impact is equivalent to 25 pounds of CO2 emissions per gallon.

    • Car and truck pollution not only harms our health in the present, but also contributes to global warming, bringing greater problems in years to come. A watchword of environmentalism is the concept of "sustainability." An action is sustainable if it serves our needs today without jeopardizing the ability of future generations (our children and grandchildren) to meet their needs. The large amount of energy consumed and pollution produced by cars and trucks is the biggest reason our transportation system is not sustainable.
    • If we buy or use more fuel-efficient cars that will be one of the single biggest steps we can take to reduce global warming.

    • Commuters may be eligible for benefits from their employers for transit or carpooling, or can receive cash by simply walking, biking, or telecommuting. These "Commuter Choice" programs cut pollution, reduce traffic congestion, and conserve energy. Ask your employer if they have a Commuter Choice program. If not, ask them to start one.

    • The earth's atmosphere is composed of several layers. We live in the "Troposphere" where most of the weather occurs; such as rain, snow and clouds. Above the troposphere is the "Stratosphere"; an important region in which effects such as the Ozone Hole and Global Warming originate. Supersonic jet airliners such as Concorde fly in the lower stratosphere whereas subsonic commercial airliners are usually in the troposphere. The narrow region between these two parts of the atmosphere is called the "Tropopause".

      •  20% bio diesel blended with 80% petroleum-based diesel reduces total hydrocarbons up to 30%, Carbon Monoxide up to 20%, and total particulate matter up to 15%. Those pollutants are linked to smog formation, climate change, and rising asthma rates.

      •  We all contribute to global warming every day. The carbon dioxide you produce by driving your car and leaving the lights on adds up quickly. You may be surprised by how much Co2 you are emitting each year. Click here to calculate your personal impact and learn how you can take action to reduce or even eliminate your emissions of carbon dioxide.
